ArenaPlus handicap and over/under betting guide explaining negative and positive handicaps, total goals betting, and simple betting examples.

Two of the most common bet types you will see on the ArenaPlus sportsbook are handicap bets and over/under bets. Both appear across basketball, football, volleyball, and most other sports markets, but they work in completely different ways. This guide explains each one clearly, with examples drawn from the sports Filipino fans follow most.

What Is Handicap Betting?

Handicap betting is a market where the bookmaker assigns a virtual points advantage or disadvantage to one of the teams before the match begins. The purpose is to level the playing field when one side is heavily favoured over the other, creating a more balanced betting market.

A negative handicap (-) is applied to the favourite. It means that team must win by more than the stated margin for your bet to pay out. A positive handicap (+) is applied to the underdog. It means that team either wins outright, or loses by less than the stated margin.

Handicap Betting Example: NBA Basketball

Suppose the Golden State Warriors are playing the Sacramento Kings, and the Warriors are given a -7.5 handicap.

  • If you bet on the Warriors at -7.5, they must win by 8 points or more for the bet to win.
  • If you bet on the Kings at +7.5, the Kings must either win the game or lose by 7 points or fewer for the bet to win.
  • If the Warriors win by exactly 7 points, both bets lose because the margin falls short of the handicap.

Half-point handicaps (7.5, 4.5, 2.5) are common precisely to avoid a situation where the final margin matches the handicap exactly. This outcome is called a push, and whole-number handicaps do carry that risk.

What Is Asian Handicap Betting?

Asian handicap is a variation that eliminates the draw outcome from football (soccer) markets by applying fractional or split handicaps. It originated in Asian markets and is now available widely across online sportsbooks.

Common Asian handicap lines include quarter-goal increments such as -0.25, -0.5, -0.75, or -1.25. A split handicap places half your stake on each of two adjacent lines. For example, a -0.75 handicap on Team A splits your bet between -0.5 and -1.0. If Team A wins by exactly one goal, you win the -0.5 part and the -1.0 part is refunded as a push.

The key benefit of Asian handicap for bettors is reduced risk from drawn results, which are common in football. Because the draw is removed as an outcome, the odds on each side tend to be tighter and closer to 50/50.

What Is Over/Under Betting?

Over/under betting, also called totals betting, is a market where you predict whether the combined score of both teams in a match will be over or under a number set by the bookmaker. You are not predicting the winner at all.

The bookmaker sets a total line based on factors including team form, pace of play, defensive records, and historical scoring patterns for that matchup. Your job is simply to decide whether the actual combined score will land above or below that line.

Over/Under Betting Example: PBA Basketball

Imagine an Alab vs. Meralco game where the bookmaker sets the total at 168.5 points.

  • If you bet the Over, the combined final score must be 169 points or more for your bet to win.
  • If you bet the Under, the combined final score must be 168 points or fewer for your bet to win.
  • If the combined score lands on exactly 168.5, that cannot happen in a basketball game because scores are whole numbers. The half-point removes any possibility of a push.

The same principle applies across football, volleyball, and other sports, although the totals lines differ significantly. A football (soccer) game might have a total set at 2.5, while a high-scoring basketball game could carry a line above 200.

What Happens If the Score Lands on the Total Exactly?

When the final score lands exactly on the over/under line, the result is a push. All stakes on that market are returned in full. This can only happen with whole-number totals. Bookmakers use half-point lines (.5) specifically to eliminate the possibility of a push, because a game cannot end with half a point.

Key Differences Between Handicap and Over/Under Bets

Handicap betting is about the margin of victory between two teams. You are picking a side, and that side must cover the assigned spread. Over/under betting has nothing to do with which team wins. You are predicting the combined scoring output of both teams in a match.

Both markets are available as pre-match and live in-play options on the ArenaPlus sportsbook, and both appear across all major sports covered on the platform including the NBA, PBA, football, and PVL volleyball.

Which Bet Type Should You Use?

The right bet depends on what you know about the matchup. Handicap bets suit situations where you have a clear view on one team’s relative strength and believe the margin of victory will exceed what the bookmaker has set. Over/under bets suit situations where you have a read on the likely pace or defensive intensity of the game, regardless of who wins.

New bettors often find over/under markets easier to start with, because you are making a single judgment about scoring output rather than picking a team and margin simultaneously. Both types are available with competitive odds whenever you place a sports bet on ArenaPlus.

Frequently asked questions

A +1.5 handicap means the team starts the match with a virtual 1.5-point or goal advantage. For your bet to win, that team must either win the game outright or lose by no more than 1 point or goal. They can afford to lose by 1 and your bet still wins. A loss by 2 or more will lose the bet.
A -2 handicap means the favoured team must win by more than 2 points or goals for your bet to win. If they win by exactly 2, the result is a push and stakes are returned. If they win by 3 or more, the bet wins. A win by 1 or a draw or a loss means the bet loses.
Over 2.5 means you are betting that 3 or more goals will be scored across the match in total. Under 2.5 means you are betting that 2 or fewer goals will be scored. Because goals are whole numbers, there is no possibility of a push when the line is set at .5. The 2.5 line is one of the most commonly used in football betting worldwide.
Yes. Handicap and over/under are independent markets on the same match. You can place them as separate single bets, or combine them into a parlay if both selections are available on the ArenaPlus sportsbook. Each market settles independently based on the final result.
