A short history of the PVL

The league’s roots go back more than two decades (PVL, Wikipedia):

  • 2004: Sports Vision Management Group, led by Jun Bernardino, Ricky Palou, Moying Martelino and Rhea Navarro, launches the Shakey’s V-League, mainly for collegiate teams. Club and military teams later joined through an Open Conference.
  • 2017: the league is renamed the Premier Volleyball League, reflecting the growing number of corporate and non-collegiate teams.
  • 2021: the PVL turns professional, becoming the first professional volleyball league in the Philippines.
  • 2022: with collegiate teams no longer eligible, the V-League returns as a separate competition for school teams.
  • 2023: the Open Conference is rebranded as the All-Filipino Conference.
  • 2026–27: the league’s tenth season introduces a new three-series format and its first Philippine Grand Champion (PVL).

The growth has been dramatic. Games that once filled small university gyms now draw finals crowds averaging more than 20,000 (Asia News Network).

How the 2026–27 PVL season works

The 2026–27 All-Filipino Conference is played in three series (PVL, Wikipedia):

Series When Format
Siklab October to December 2026 Single round-robin; top four reach the semifinals, top two get a twice-to-beat advantage; crowns its own champion
Sigla After Siklab Same format, with its own champion
Sinag Around March to April 2027 Points from Siklab and Sigla decide seeding; ends with the Philippine Grand Champion

The Siklab Series also has an all-to-play rule: every player on a roster must play at least three rallies (PVL). Teams earn three standings points for a 3-0 or 3-1 win, while a 3-2 result gives the winner two and the loser one. Follow the race in [LINK: PVL Standings].
