A short history of Spikers’ Turf

  • 2014: the Shakey’s V-League adds a men’s division during its 2014 Reinforced Open Conference.
  • 2015: Sports Vision spins the men’s division off into a separate league, Spikers’ Turf.
  • 2019 onwards: the league stops holding a separate Collegiate Conference; school teams instead compete alongside club teams in the Open Conference.
  • 2026: in its tenth season, Spikers’ Turf begins sharing playdates with the PVL, starting with a joint opening at SM Seaside Cebu Arena on 10 October.

Unlike the PVL, which turned professional in 2021, Spikers’ Turf is still semi-professional, so players can also take part in the relaunched V-League (Wikipedia).

How a Spikers’ Turf season works

Like the PVL, a Spikers’ Turf season is split into conferences, such as the Open Conference and the Invitational Conference. Each conference has its own champion.

The 2026 Open Conference shows a typical format (Sports Bytes, Wikipedia):

  1. Elimination round: a double round-robin, so every team plays every other team twice.
  2. Semifinals: the top four teams play a single round-robin among themselves.
  3. Finals: the top two after the semifinals meet in a best-of-three championship series; the other two play for bronze.

Teams are ranked first by wins, then by match points, using the FIVB ranking system.

The 2026 season so far

2026 Open Conference

The Open Conference ran from 25 February to 19 April 2026 with six teams (Wikipedia). Before it started, Cignal, the league’s most successful team, left Spikers’ Turf, opening up the title race. Criss Cross, the reigning Invitational champions at the time, won the Open Conference (Wikipedia), and AEP Cabstars finished third (Wikipedia).

2026 Invitational Conference

The 2026 Invitational Conference opened on 10 October 2026 at SM Seaside Cebu Arena, on the same day as the PVL’s All-Filipino Conference (Daily Tribune).

  • 10 teams take part, including the top two teams from the V-League Men’s Collegiate Challenge.
  • Shared playdates: Spikers’ Turf matches are scheduled between PVL games every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, usually at 3:30 p.m. (BusinessWorld).
  • Own playdates: the league also keeps separate match days of its own.

What to watch for in men’s volleyball

If you mostly follow the PVL, a few things stand out when you watch Spikers’ Turf:

  • A higher net. The men’s net is 2.43 m, 19 cm higher than the women’s 2.24 m, so attacks come from higher up and blocks reach further over the net.
  • More power from the serve. Jump serves are a bigger weapon in the men’s game, and a run of aces can swing a set quickly.
  • Shorter rallies. Powerful attacks often end rallies faster, which puts a premium on serve-receive and blocking.
  • The same rules. Scoring, rotation and faults follow the same FIVB rules as the women’s game. See Volleyball Rules.

Shared match days make it easy to compare the two styles: the Spikers’ Turf game usually sits between the two PVL matches.
