It’s the most points a player can score from one shot in FIBA basketball.

Free throws from team fouls and technicals

Free throws also come from team fouls. Once a team has 4 team fouls in a quarter, every later defensive foul gives the opponent 2 free throws (FIBA, Art. 42).

A technical foul gives the opponent 1 free throw, and the team that had the ball keeps possession (FIBA, Art. 36).

When does a basket count?

A basket counts when a live ball enters the hoop from above and stays in or passes through (FIBA, Art. 16.1.1). Added in August 2024, it sits 27 feet from the ring (The Philippine Star).

PBA commissioner Willie Marcial said in October 2025 that the line is here to stay. It means a PBA team can now erase a deficit faster than under FIBA or NBA scoring.

Gilas Pilipinas plays under full FIBA rules in international games. There’s no 4-point shot there, so the most a single shot can earn is 3 points, plus 1 on an and-one.

The 3×3 format scores differently again. A basket inside the arc is worth 1 point and one from beyond it is worth 2, so a three-point shooter’s value doubles (FIBA 3×3).

How to read a basketball scoreboard and box score

The scoreboard tells you the live score. The box score breaks down basketball scoring player by player, so you can see who scored and how.

Find each team’s total points and the quarter being played.

Check the game clock for time left in the quarter, and the shot clock for time left in the possession.

Look at team fouls. A player can get 1, 2 or 3 free throws depending on the foul.

Why is a three-pointer worth 3 points?

A three-pointer is worth more because it’s taken from farther away and is harder to make. The extra point rewards long-range shooting and spreads the defense.

Is the 4-point shot allowed in the NBA or FIBA?

No. The 4-point line is a PBA rule, and FIBA and NBA games use a maximum of 3 points per field goal.

What is an and-one in basketball?

An and-one is when a player is fouled while making a shot.
