All times are Philippine time.

PBA vs MPBL at a glance

The quickest way to see the difference is side by side. The PBA has fewer, company-backed teams playing three separate conferences a season, with imports in two of them. The MPBL has many more teams, each tied to a city or province, playing one long season split into North and South Divisions.

PBA

MPBL

First season

1975

2018

Team identity

Company-backed franchises

Cities and provinces

Teams (2025–26 seasons)

12 franchises, plus guest team Macau

28 at the start of 2026; 26 finished the regular season

Structure

Three conferences, each with its own champion

One season, North and South Divisions

Imports

In the Commissioner’s Cup and Governors’ Cup

To be confirmed

Finals

Best-of-seven in each conference

Best-of-seven national Finals in 2026

Season calendar

Season 50 ran from October 2025 to December 2026

2026 season ran from April to December

Source: PBA and MPBL season reports via Inquirer, Philstar, and Daily Tribune; founding years cross-checked on Wikipedia

Teams and identity

PBA teams carry the names of the companies that own them, such as San Miguel Beermen, TNT Tropang 5G, and Meralco Bolts. MPBL teams are named after the cities and provinces they represent, such as the Quezon Huskers and the Cebu Greats. That gives the MPBL a hometown feel, with many teams playing in their own local arenas.

The PBA occasionally invites foreign guest teams, such as the Macau Giant Pandas in the Season 50 Governors’ Cup. The MPBL splits its teams by geography into a North Division and a South Division, and team lineups can change from season to season as franchises join or leave.

How each season works

A PBA season has three conferences, the Philippine Cup, Commissioner’s Cup, and Governors’ Cup, and each crowns its own champion. An MPBL season is a single tournament: a regular season, a play-in, division playoffs, and a national Finals between the North and South champions. So the PBA produces three champions a season, and the MPBL produces one.

PBA: each conference has its own elimination round and playoffs. For the full calendar, see the PBA schedule guide, and for one conference in depth, the PBA Commissioner’s Cup guide.

MPBL: every team plays each other once in the regular season, the top six in each division go straight to the playoffs, and teams ranked 7th to 10th play in for the last two spots. The division playoffs then lead to a best-of-seven national Finals.

In 2026, the two leagues’ playoffs overlap in October and November, so fans can follow both postseasons at once.

Rule differences

The PBA keeps a few rules of its own even after aligning most of its game rules with FIBA in 2026. It still uses 12-minute quarters, a six-foul limit per player, and its four-point line (Daily Tribune). It’s also the only one of the two leagues with imports, in two of its three conferences.

Rule

PBA

MPBL

Quarter length

12 minutes

To be confirmed

Personal foul limit

Six

To be confirmed

Four-point line

Yes, since Season 49

To be confirmed

Imports

One per team in the Commissioner’s Cup and Governors’ Cup

To be confirmed

These differences shape how games play out, including how many points teams score, which is one reason totals lines can differ between the two leagues.

The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) is the country’s long-running professional league, built around company-backed franchises.
