What is the NBA Draft?

Every June, the NBA Draft determines which teams select the league’s incoming players. Teams make 60 selections across two rounds, and in 2026, the 80th edition of the Draft was held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

The first draft was held in 1947 in Detroit, Michigan, by the Basketball Association of America (BAA), with 80 selections across 10 rounds. The BAA merged with the National Basketball League in 1949 to become the NBA.

The NBA Draft has followed a two-night format since 2024. Teams have five minutes per pick in Round 1 and four minutes per pick in Round 2.

Before the draft, eligible players may declare through the Early Entry process, and top prospects attend the NBA Draft Combine in Chicago. For 2026, the Early Entry deadline was April 25, the combine ran from May 10 to 18, and the withdrawal deadline was June 14. The NBA G League Combine was also held in Chicago, from May 8 to 11. (All dates are in Philippine time.)

NBA Draft Lottery and Draft Order

The NBA Draft Lottery sets the order of the first 14 picks. The first four picks are decided through a draw, while the remaining lottery teams select for the fifth through 14th picks in reverse order of their regular-season records. Picks 15 to 30 and the entire second round also follow the reverse order of regular-season record. Each team starts with one pick in each round, but many picks change hands through trades before or during the draft.

The 14 teams that missed the playoffs take part in the lottery, and the three teams with the lowest regular-season winning percentages each have a 14 percent chance of winning the No. 1 pick. Under the format used since 2019, the team with the lowest regular-season winning percentage is guaranteed a top-five pick.

The 2026 lottery was held at McCormick Place in Chicago on May 11, and the Washington Wizards won the No. 1 pick.

What do “from” and “via” mean in NBA Draft results?

In the Draft results, “from” names the team that originally owned the pick, and “via” lists the teams it passed through before reaching the team that used it. The ‘Original owner’ column in the tables below follows this format. For example, the No. 30 pick in 2026 was made by the Dallas Mavericks, from Oklahoma City via Washington and Philadelphia.
