What Is Basketball? A Beginner’s Guide to How the Game Works

Share

Basketball is a team sport where two teams of five players try to score by shooting a ball through a hoop. The team with more points when time runs out wins.

This guide covers how basketball is played, scoring, the basic rules, a short history, and why the sport matters so much in the Philippines.

What is basketball? The quick answer

Basketball is played by two teams of five players each. The team that scores more points by the end of playing time wins (FIBA Official Basketball Rules). Players move the ball by dribbling or passing, and they score by shooting it through the other team’s basket.

Here is how the game compares across the leagues Filipino fans follow most.

How is basketball played?

A basketball game is a series of possessions. The team with the ball (the offense) tries to score, while the other team (the defense) tries to stop them and win the ball back.

Starting the game

A game starts with a jump ball at the centre circle. The referee tosses the ball up between one player from each team, and each player tries to tap it to a teammate.

Moving the ball

Players can move with the ball only by dribbling, which means bouncing it with one hand. They can also pass it to a teammate. Running with the ball without dribbling is a violation called travelling.

Offense and defense

When the offense scores or loses the ball, the other team takes possession and attacks the opposite basket. Teams switch ends at halftime under FIBA rules, so each side attacks both baskets during a game.

A missed shot that bounces off the rim is up for grabs. Catching it is called a rebound, and winning rebounds gives a team extra chances to score.

How does scoring work in basketball?

Basketball scoring has three values: 1, 2 or 3 points, depending on where and how the shot is taken (FIBA Official Basketball Rules, Art. 16).

Shot Points Where it happens
Free throw 1 Taken from the free-throw line after certain fouls
Field goal 2 Any shot made from inside the three-point line
Three-pointer 3 Any shot made from beyond the three-point line

Under FIBA rules, the three-point line is an arc 6.75 m from the point under the basket. The court itself measures 28 m by 15 m (FIBA).

A player fouled while making a shot gets the basket plus one free throw. Fans call this an and-one.

Basic basketball rules for beginners

You don’t need to know every rule to enjoy a game. These are the basketball rules for beginners that come up most often.

The shot clock

A team has 24 seconds to attempt a shot that hits the rim, or it loses the ball. In some situations in the attacking half, the clock resets to 14 seconds instead (FIBA, Art. 29).

The 8-second rule

A team that wins the ball in its own half has 8 seconds to cross the half-court line (FIBA, Art. 28). This stops teams from stalling in the backcourt.

Fouls and free throws

A foul is illegal contact, such as pushing, holding or hitting a player’s arm as they shoot. Fouls on a shooter usually lead to free throws.

Under FIBA rules, a player who commits 5 fouls must leave the game for good (FIBA, Art. 4). The NBA and PBA allow 6.

Out of bounds and violations

The ball is out of bounds when it touches the floor on or outside the boundary lines. The other team then throws it back in from the sideline or baseline.

Other common violations include travelling and a double dribble, which is dribbling with both hands or dribbling again after stopping. A violation hands the ball to the other team.

The five basketball positions

Each team usually plays two guards, two forwards and one center. Coaches number these roles 1 to 5.

  • Point guard (1): runs the offense and brings the ball up the court.
  • Shooting guard (2): scores from outside and off the dribble.
  • Small forward (3): the all-rounder who can score and defend anywhere.
  • Power forward (4): rebounds, sets screens and adds shooting range.
  • Center (5): protects the rim and scores near the basket.

Basic basketball terms

These basic basketball terms will help you follow commentary on any broadcast.

Term What it means
Assist A pass that leads straight to a teammate’s basket
Rebound Catching the ball after a missed shot
Steal Taking the ball from an opponent
Block Stopping a shot by touching the ball as it rises
Turnover Losing the ball to the other team without taking a shot
Fast break A quick attack before the defense can set up
Box score The table of each player’s stats after a game

A short history of basketball

Basketball was invented by James Naismith in December 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts. He needed an indoor game to keep people active through the cold winter (Jr. NBA).

The first goals were two peach baskets nailed 10 feet above the floor. Naismith wrote 13 original rules, and the first game used a soccer ball with nine players on each side (Jr. NBA).

Since then, the history of basketball has been one of steady change. Teams dropped to five players, and the shot clock and three-point line were added to speed up the game.

Basketball in the Philippines

Basketball is the most popular sport in the Philippines. It arrived during the American colonial period, introduced through the YMCA (Basketball in the Philippines).

The country became an early Asian powerhouse. The Philippines won bronze at the 1954 FIBA World Championship in Rio de Janeiro. That is still the best finish by an Asian team at the World Cup (Basketball in the Philippines).

The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) played its first game on 9 April 1975 at the Araneta Coliseum. It was the first professional basketball league in Asia (Philippine Basketball Association).

Today the PBA has 12 teams and three conferences: the Philippine Cup, the Commissioner’s Cup and the Governors’ Cup. In 2023, the Philippines co-hosted the FIBA Basketball World Cup with Japan and Indonesia.

Filipino fans also use a few local terms. An import is a foreign reinforcement allowed in certain PBA conferences. A team with a twice-to-beat advantage needs to win only once in a playoff series, while its opponent must win twice.

How to start watching basketball

The fastest way to learn basketball is to watch a full game with a few things in mind. Use these steps for your first PBA, Gilas Pilipinas or NBA game.

  1. Read the scoreboard: score, quarter, game clock, shot clock and team fouls.
  2. Follow the ball for the first quarter and count how many passes come before each shot.
  3. Watch which team wins the rebounds, since extra possessions often decide close games.
  4. Note when a referee blows the whistle, and check the replay to see the foul or violation.
  5. Pick one player per team and watch what they do without the ball.
  6. Check the box score after the game to match what you saw with the stats.
