Basketball scoring is simple at its core. A free throw is worth 1 point, a basket inside the three-point arc is worth 2, and a basket from beyond it is worth 3.
This guide explains each type of score, how free throws are awarded, when a basket counts, and how the PBA’s 4-point line changes the maths.
Under the international rules most leagues follow, basketball scoring gives each basket 1, 2 or 3 points. The value depends on whether it’s a free throw and where the shot was released (FIBA Official Basketball Rules, Art. 16).
| Score | Points | How it happens |
| Free throw | 1 | An uncontested shot from the free-throw line, awarded after certain fouls |
| Two-point field goal | 2 | Any basket from inside the three-point arc, including dunks and layups |
| Three-point field goal | 3 | Any basket released from beyond the three-point arc |
| Four-point field goal (PBA only) | 4 | A basket from beyond the PBA’s 27-foot line |
| 3×3 basket | 1 or 2 | 1 point inside the arc, 2 points beyond it |

The three-point line is the arc that separates 2-point shots from 3-point shots. Its distance from the basket depends on the league.
Under FIBA rules, the arc sits 6.75 m from the point on the floor directly under the basket. Near the corners, the line runs straight, 0.90 m in from each sideline (FIBA, Art. 2.5.4).
On a 15 m wide court, that puts the corner three about 6.60 m from the basket. It’s the shortest three-pointer on the floor.
In the NBA, the arc is 23 ft 9 in (about 7.24 m) from the middle of the basket (NBA Rule No. 1). The NBA’s corner lines are also straight, 3 ft in from the sidelines.
A shot with a foot on the line is worth 2 points. Under FIBA rules, the three-point line itself is not part of the three-point area, so the shooter must be fully behind it (FIBA, Art. 2.5.4).
A free throw is a shot from the free-throw line with no defender contesting it. Each one made adds 1 point, and free throws are a big part of basketball scoring in close games.
The number of free throws depends on the shot that was fouled (FIBA, Art. 34):
A made three-pointer plus a made free throw is called a four-point play. It’s the most points a player can score from one shot in FIBA basketball.
Free throws also come from team fouls. Once a team has 4 team fouls in a quarter, every later defensive foul gives the opponent 2 free throws (FIBA, Art. 42).
A technical foul gives the opponent 1 free throw, and the team that had the ball keeps possession (FIBA, Art. 36).
A basket counts when a live ball enters the hoop from above and stays in or passes through (FIBA, Art. 16.1.1). A ball pushed up through the net from below is a violation, not a score.
A shot released before the buzzer still counts if it goes in. Under FIBA rules, a goal counts if the ball was in the air when the signal sounded to end the quarter (FIBA, Art. 10.4).
A player needs at least 0.3 seconds on the clock to catch the ball and shoot. With 0.2 or 0.1 seconds left, only a tap or a direct dunk can count (FIBA, Art. 16.2.5).
If a defender touches a shot on its way down above the ring, the basket counts anyway. If an attacker does it, the basket is cancelled (FIBA, Art. 31).
A few rare situations follow special scoring rules. They don’t happen often, but they confuse fans when they do.
| Situation | What happens |
| Accidental basket in your own hoop | 2 points to the opponents, credited to their captain on the court |
| Deliberate basket in your own hoop | A violation; the basket doesn’t count |
| Last free throw hits the ring, then a player legally taps it in | Counts as 2 points |
| Defensive goaltending on a shot | The basket counts as if it went in |

A tied game goes to overtime. Each overtime lasts 5 minutes, and teams play as many as needed to break the tie (FIBA, Art. 8.7).
There’s a 2-minute break before each overtime, and teams keep attacking the same baskets as in the fourth quarter. The NBA also plays 5-minute overtimes (NBA Rule No. 5).
PBA basketball scoring has one feature no other major league uses: the 4-point line. Added in August 2024, it sits 27 feet from the ring (The Philippine Star).
PBA commissioner Willie Marcial said in October 2025 that the line is here to stay. It means a PBA team can now erase a deficit faster than under FIBA or NBA scoring.
Gilas Pilipinas plays under full FIBA rules in international games. There’s no 4-point shot there, so the most a single shot can earn is 3 points, plus 1 on an and-one.
The 3×3 format scores differently again. A basket inside the arc is worth 1 point and one from beyond it is worth 2, so a three-point shooter’s value doubles (FIBA 3×3).
The scoreboard tells you the live score. The box score breaks down basketball scoring player by player, so you can see who scored and how.
Here’s a worked example. A player who makes 6 two-pointers, 3 three-pointers and 4 free throws scores 12 + 9 + 4 = 25 points.
A free throw is worth 1 point. A player can get 1, 2 or 3 free throws depending on the foul.
A three-pointer is worth more because it’s taken from farther away and is harder to make. The extra point rewards long-range shooting and spreads the defense.
No. The 4-point line is a PBA rule, and FIBA and NBA games use a maximum of 3 points per field goal.
An and-one is when a player is fouled while making a shot. The basket counts, and the player gets 1 extra free throw.
Under FIBA rules, a four-point play is the most from one shot: a made three-pointer plus an and-one free throw. In the PBA, a made 4-pointer plus a free throw can add up to 5 points.
