The PBA Commissioner’s Cup is the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) conference where each team can add one import, with no height limit since Season 49. Barangay Ginebra San Miguel are the reigning champions after winning the Season 50 edition.
This guide covers how the conference works, its import rules and guest teams, its history since 1993, and its recent champions.
The PBA Commissioner’s Cup is one of the three conferences in a PBA season. It’s one of two import conferences, alongside the Governors’ Cup, where each team can add one foreign player. The Philippine Cup, by contrast, is all-Filipino. Each conference crowns its own champion, so the Commissioner’s Cup is a full title in its own right.
Its place in the calendar has changed over the years. In Season 50, it was the second conference, played from 11 March to 17 June 2026. For how all three conferences fit together and when games are played, see the PBA schedule guide.
In the Commissioner’s Cup, each team can field one import, a foreign reinforcement. Since Season 49, there has been no height limit for Commissioner’s Cup imports, after the PBA board scrapped the cap in June 2024 (Spin.ph). Before that, the limit changed often, ranging from 6 feet 4 inches to 6 feet 10 inches.
| Period | Import height limit |
| 2011 | 6 feet 4 inches |
| 2012 | No limit |
| 2014 | 6 feet 9 inches for teams that made the previous Philippine Cup playoffs |
| 2017 to 2023 | 6 feet 10 inches |
| 2023–24 season | 6 feet 9 inches |
| Season 49 onward | No limit |

The Governors’ Cup is the other import conference, but it keeps a height limit: 6 feet 6 inches in Season 50.
The Commissioner’s Cup has sometimes included guest teams, foreign clubs invited to play alongside the PBA franchises. They play the full conference and can reach the Finals. Recent examples are the Bay Area Dragons of Hong Kong, who reached the 2022–23 Finals, and the Macau Black Knights in Season 50.
The Bay Area Dragons finished first in the 2022–23 elimination round before losing the Finals to Ginebra in seven games. Macau returned for the Season 50 Governors’ Cup under a new name, the Macau Giant Pandas.
The Commissioner’s Cup follows the usual PBA conference structure: an elimination round, then playoffs that lead to a best-of-seven Finals. The exact playoff format, such as twice-to-beat advantages for top seeds and series lengths in earlier rounds, can change from one edition to the next, so check the PBA’s announced format for each season.
The Commissioner’s Cup was first held in 1993, when it became the second conference of the PBA season, named after the league’s commissioner. It ran until 2002, was replaced by other import conferences from 2003 to 2010, and returned in 2011 when the PBA went back to three conferences per season.
| Period | What happened |
| 1993 to 2002 | First run as the season’s second conference |
| 2003 to 2010 | Not held; the Invitational Championship and then the Fiesta Conference took its place |
| 2011 | Returned as the league restored three conferences |
| 2020 to 2021 | Cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic |
| 2022–23 onward | Back on the calendar, with guest teams in some editions |
The Red Bull Thunder won back-to-back titles in 2001 and 2002, and no team has won two Commissioner’s Cups in a row since.
San Miguel Beermen have won the most Commissioner’s Cup titles, with five, followed by Barangay Ginebra San Miguel with four.
