Basketball Odds: How the Lines Work and How to Read Them

Basketball odds show two things: how much a bet pays and how likely the sportsbook thinks a result is. In decimal odds, multiply your stake by the price to get your total return, so ₱500 at 1.90 returns ₱950.

This hub explains each type of basketball line, how to read the numbers, and where to go next for a deeper guide on each one. Odds are estimates, not promises, so treat every bet as paid entertainment.

How to read a basketball betting line

A basketball betting line usually shows three markets side by side: the moneyline, the handicap and the total. Here is how a typical PBA line might look.

Team Moneyline Handicap Total points
Team A 1.45 −5.5 (1.90) Over 200.5 (1.87)
Team B 2.80 +5.5 (1.90) Under 200.5 (1.93)

Odds are illustrative examples, not live prices.

Read it like this:

  • Moneyline: Team A is the favourite at 1.45, and Team B is the underdog at 2.80.
  • Handicap: Team A must win by 6 or more, or Team B must win or lose by 5 or fewer.
  • Total: the combined score must be 201 or more for over, or 200 or fewer for under.

The number in brackets is the price for that line. Filipino fans often call the favourite the llamado and the underdog the dehado.

Odds formats: decimal, Hong Kong and American

Most Philippine sportsbooks show decimal odds, which include your stake in the return . You may also see Hong Kong or American odds on other sites and in foreign media.

Decimal Hong Kong American Implied probability
1.50 0.50 −200 66.7%
1.85 0.85 −118 54.1%
1.90 0.90 −111 52.6%
2.00 1.00 +100 50.0%
2.50 1.50 +150 40.0%
4.00 3.00 +300 25.0%

Hong Kong odds show profit only, so they’re always the decimal price minus 1. American odds use ₱100 as a base: −200 means you stake ₱200 to win ₱100, and +150 means a ₱100 stake wins ₱150. For a full walkthrough, see our guide on how to read betting odds

Moneyline odds

A moneyline is a bet on which team wins the game. Lower odds mean the favourite, and higher odds mean the underdog.

A ₱500 bet on Team A at 1.45 returns ₱725, which is ₱225 profit. The same stake on Team B at 2.80 returns ₱1,400.

Basketball games can’t end in a draw, because tied games go to overtime (FIBA Official Basketball Rules, Art. 8.7).

Handicap (spread) odds

A basketball handicap, also called the spread, gives one team a points head start to even out a mismatch. The minus sign marks the favourite, and the plus sign marks the underdog.

Most basketball handicaps use half-points, such as −5.5, so there’s no tie on the line. With a whole-number line such as −5, a 5-point win is a push, and your stake is usually returned.

Total points (over/under) odds

A total is a bet on the combined score of both teams, not on who wins. The sportsbook sets a line, such as 200.5, and you choose over or under.

Totals depend on the rules of the league. PBA quarters run 12 minutes, compared with 10 minutes in FIBA games. That’s why PBA totals are usually set higher than FIBA totals for similar teams (Philippine Basketball Association).

Quarter, half and player lines

Sportsbooks also offer lines on parts of a game and on individual players. These follow the same reading rules as full-game lines.

  • Quarter and half lines: a moneyline, handicap or total for one quarter or half only.
  • Player lines: over or under a set number of a player’s points, rebounds or assists.
  • Alternate lines: the same market at a different number, such as −8.5 instead of −5.5, at a different price.

How to turn odds into probability

Implied probability is the chance of a result that the odds suggest. For decimal odds, divide 1 by the price and multiply by 100.

At 1.90, the implied probability is 52.6%. At 2.80, it’s 35.7%. If your own estimate of a result is higher than the implied probability, the price may be good value, but your estimate can be wrong.

What is the margin in basketball odds?

The margin is the sportsbook’s built-in edge. Add up the implied probabilities in a market, and anything above 100% is the margin.

In the example line, the total is priced at 1.87 and 1.93. That adds up to 53.5% + 51.8% = 105.3%, so the margin is about 5.3%.

This is why betting carries a house edge. To compare margins across sportsbooks, see our guide on what to look for in a basketball sportsbook.

Why do basketball odds move?

Odds move when new information arrives or when money comes in heavily on one side. Injury news, lineup changes and late betting volume can all shift a line before tip-off.

In live betting, odds update during the game as the score and clock change. Your bet locks in at the price you accepted, so check the bet slip before you confirm.

PBA odds: what’s different about Philippine basketball

PBA odds reflect two rules you won’t find in FIBA games. The first is the 12-minute quarter, which pushes totals higher.

The second is the 4-point line, 27 feet from the ring, added in August 2024 (The Philippine Star). One 4-pointer can swing a handicap or total by more than a three, so late-game lines can move sharply.

Gilas Pilipinas plays under full FIBA rules internationally, with 10-minute quarters and no 4-point shot. Check which rules apply before reading any total. For how each basket is counted, see how basketball scoring works.

How to read basketball odds on your bet slip

Use this routine every time you look at a basketball line.

  1. Check the odds format and switch to decimal if you can.
  2. Identify the market: moneyline, handicap or total.
  3. Multiply your stake by the odds to see your total return.
  4. Divide 1 by the odds to get the implied probability.
  5. Add both sides of the market together to see the margin.
  6. Confirm the price on your bet slip before you submit, since odds can change.

Responsible gaming

Betting is paid entertainment, never a way to make money or recover losses. Odds tell you the price of a bet, not what will happen.

  • Set a budget: decide what you can afford to lose before you start.
  • Set a time limit: take breaks, and don’t bet when tired or upset.
  • Never chase losses: a lost bet is the cost of entertainment.
  • Use the tools: deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion. Visit our responsible gaming page.
